Background of the Study:
Media censorship plays a significant role in shaping local political discourse by controlling the flow of information and influencing public opinion. In Onitsha North, recent instances of media suppression have sparked debates about the balance between state security and freedom of expression (Ndukwe, 2024). The selective restriction of news coverage on political issues can limit citizens’ access to critical information, thereby affecting electoral choices and accountability (Okafor, 2023). Scholars argue that while censorship might be justified on grounds of maintaining public order, its abuse often results in a stifled democratic process and diminished political participation (Ibrahim, 2025). The local context of Onitsha North reveals a complex interplay between governmental regulations and media practices, which directly influences political debates at the grassroots level.
